September - A month of "What I know for sure"

There are many good books and among them there are a few which are life-changing.

Some of them introduce new ideas, others make something I’ve heard million times finally sink in. It’s no longer something “I know” but something I feel in my whole body.

Every month I introduce one of these books and through a series of activities over the upcoming weeks, we will unpack the ideas each book conveys.

I hope that each and one of these books would have the same impact on you as they had on me - making you stronger, more confident, more centered as you become more connected to yourself.

September’s theme is inspired by “What I Know For Sure” by Oprah Winfrey.

If there’s one thing which fascinates me about Oprah it’s how she approaches life and her book “What I Know For Sure” is filled from cover to cover with stories offering a powerful and intimate glimpse into Oprah’s heart and mind.

Earlier this summer I watched a Supersoul session video with Tony Robbins. In it he asked the audience whether they focused on what they had or on what they didn’t.

The majority of the people raised their hand for “focusing on what I don’t have”. A few people on “what I do have”. Oprah was one of the latter.

Then Tony said jokingly “Easy for Oprah to focus on what she has. Look at how much she has!”

Everyone laughed, me included, while his words were sinking in.

Oprah’s focus doesn’t stem from how much she has. She has so much because of what she chooses to focus on.

And her book “What I know for sure” is a proof of that.

The book is a collection of short essays, most of them 1-2 pages long, organized by theme - joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power.

Each essay is Oprah’s answer to the question she was once asked by Gene Siskel “What do you know for sure?”.

Since that question caught Oprah in her tracks, she had made it a rule for herself to come up with another answer every month and she has been sharing these answers in a “What I Know for Sure” column in the O Magazine for over 14 years now.

So what does Oprah know for sure?

“I know for sure: Your journey begins with a choice to get up, step out, and live fully.” – Oprah Winfrey

Here are some of my favorite picks from the book

The Ahhh moments

Those are the delightful treasures life has for us, if we take a moment to appreciate them. Oprah’s example in the book?

Nope not her singing with Tina Turner. Although she talks about that too.

“My 4 p.m. cup of masala chai tea (spicy, hot, with foamed almond milk on top)."

That surely changed how I enjoy my glass of water after work out and meditation in the morning.

You don't need to be Oprah to appreciate the Ahh moments in your life. And each and every one of us has them.

Yet again, what do you choose to focus on?

The question Oprah asks herself when she’s in a difficult situation

“what would I do if I weren’t afraid of making a mistake, feeling rejected, looking foolish, or being alone?”

“when you remove the fear, the answer you’ve been searching for comes into focus”

The power and pleasure of being grateful

If there's one thing everyone knows about Oprah is how much she treasures gratitude.

Here’s the entry for 12 October 1996 from her gratitude journal.

  1. "A run around Florida’s Fisher Island with a slight breeze that kept me cool
  2. Eating a cold melon on a bench in the sun
  3. A long and hilarious chat with Gayle about her blind date with Mr. Potato Head
  4. Sorbet in a cone, so sweet that I licked my finger
  5. Maya Angelou calling to read me a new poem"

We’ve got to hand it to Ms Winfrey she knows how to live her life on her own terms.

I invite you to join the conversation
